Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in California to his father, a cook named Amos “Bud” Hanks, and his mother, a Portuguese hospital worker named Janet Marylyn. He grew up with several siblings, and unlike who he is now, he wasn’t Mr. Popular in school.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Hanks explained, “I was a geek, a spaz. I was horribly, painfully, terribly shy.” It’s incredible how much things and people can change over the years. Now, the shy kid is an A-list actor and one of the most popular names in Tinseltown!
