What ‘Made in America’ Products are Still Made Here?

American brands that have been existing for so many years continue to appeal to many people. That is because some of these brands have been able to stand the test of time, continue to create images of nostalgia for consumers, and have also grown to become well-loved and appreciated as reputable American brands.

Shockingly, many of these brands, which have grown to become an essential part of our everyday lives, do not continue to offer products made within the country. Manufacturing these products overseas has continually made it difficult to ascertain brands that create jobs and are thus responsible for the economic growth within the United States. Let’s have a quick look at some of these brands to know what’s Made in the USA.

Converse: Made Overseas

Though headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Converse is one of the few popular brands that have moved its production activities out of the country since its acquisition by Nike in 2003. This tennis shoe company began its operations in 1908 and later became a known fashion brand famous amongst pro-skaters and other street style lovers.

Converse footwear gets noticed to position itself as an “all-American” brand continually; however, the shoes produced do not genuinely get made in America. These colorful sneakers get made either in Indonesian or Chinese factories. It won’t be surprising if you notice so many people wearing converse in Indonesia and China as you would typically observe in America.

Forbes: Sold Overseas

Forbes media which released its first issue in 1917, has had a significant influence on the American audience through its digital, print, and television outlet. Although still based in Jersey City, New Jersey, this media giant got sold to Integrated Whale Media Investments, a Hong Kong investment group, in 2014. The brand reportedly reaches an average of 75 million people each month.

The Hong Kong-based group of international investors has a majority stake in the company, and Steve Forbes remains the chairman and editor-in-chief. In a previous attempt to explain the motive behind the international sale to a Hong Kong based company, Forbes announced on their blog that they were shifting from print to digital content as they continually need to have a more extensive reach beyond the American audiences.

New Balance: Made Overseas

New Balance, the well-known athletic shoe brand, which claims to be an American company, also produces its footwear outside the country. Headquartered in Oregon, this creative brand continues to uphold the claims that they have American designs. Still, their new model wears are not made from 100% American-sourced materials.

Most New Balance materials get noticed to have overseas sources, including their outer soles, which gets manufactured in China. The brand continues to label their shoes as “Made in the USA,” but many qualities about these New Balance shoes clearly states that they are not entirely American.

Dirt Devil: Made Overseas

The Dirt Devil hand vacuum remains a powerful tool Americans have relied on for decades to keep their homes clean. This brand name of household vacuum cleaners and floor care, created in 1984 by Royal Appliance Manufacturing, was bought by the Chinese manufacturer TTI in 2013. With its headquarter still based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company is an all-American company.

Although the company’s headquarters remain in the United States, most of the vacuum cleaners sold today are from China. That is primarily because China reportedly makes most of the TTI’s range of products with the Hoover and Dirt devil cleaners inclusive.

Nike: Made Overseas

Nike remains one of the world’s most recognized retailers of footwear and clothing for both athletes and non-athletes alike. This company is reputable for providing individuals and sports teams with exclusive sporting apparel. Although the brand product has continued to represent the American style and athleticism for many years, China remains the foremost manufacturer of most of them.

Most of Nike’s footwear gets made in overseas factories located mainly in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Though an American company, it is constantly challenging for companies like the Nike brand to ensure an ethical workplace standard when outsourcing labor outside of the United States. The media recently reported that it gets made under forced labor conditions in one of their Chinese manufacturing plants.

Ray-Bans: Made Overseas

One of the few Sunglasses producing companies that finds unique ways to thrill many people is the Ray-Bans brand. This iconic brand, founded by Bausch & Lomb in 1937, is another American brand that continues to appeal to many people, especially after Tom Cruise wore them in the film “Risky Business.” Despite being attributed to American faces for many years, these products do not get produced in America.

The Ray-Bans brand for sunglasses got sold by Bausch & Lomb to the Luxoticca Company in 1999, which later moved the production of the sunglasses to their factory in Italy. As the company continues to expand, more factories began to spring up outside of Italy to include locations such as China. The Ray-Bans series of sunglasses which is still American-made, is the vintage Bausch & Lomb frames.

iPads and iPhones: Made Overseas

The apple range of intelligent devices is undoubtedly one of those products many people revere as a reputable American Brand. Apple has its headquarter situated in Cupertino, California, but provides quality products to worldwide customers. Though Apple remains an American company, China manufactures its iPhones and iPads.

The creation of iPads and iPhones reportedly requires specific rare earth elements such as gold, copper, and silver, which China controls 97% of the earth’s supply of these rare elements.

Tesla: Made Overseas

Tesla is constantly applauded for its green technology and design brilliance and pioneers the American electric vehicles dream. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, the company also decided to create another manufacturing plant in Shanghai, China, where its CEO Elon Musk has spent close to $2 billion.

Creating this factory in China enables Elon to take Tesla there as it would have been too expensive to export cars to China. With a sustained manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, Tesla continues to get touted as one of the most American cars. However, only about 50% of the products actual parts get made in the country.

Motorola: Made Overseas

Motorola, which started as an American telecommunication company owned by Google, is now a subsidiary of the Chinese multinational technology company, Lenovo. Lenovo, which purchased the company from Google in 2014, intended to enter the U.S. smartphone market. The company remained headquartered in Chicago and actively continued to use the Motorola brand.

Lenovo has also reportedly merged its existing smartphone division, including design, development, and manufacturing, into the Motorola Mobility Unit. Although Motorola continues to get situated in Midwestern American regions such as Chicago and Illinois, like so many other products, their production takes place in their respective Chinese and Indian factories.

Segway Inc.: Sold Overseas

Segway Inc. is an American manufacturer of the two-wheeled personal transporters. The Segway futuristic-looking self-balancing electric scooter, first released in 2002, is a popular way for tourists to explore new places and allows security guards to get around quickly. The company continues to market its products to various niche markets, including corporate campuses, police departments, military bases, and so on. Unfortunately, they continue to struggle in the American market.

This continued struggle led the company to pass down several owners until it eventually sold to Ninebot in 2015. This Shanghai based tech company that manufactures short-distance motorized transport devices has continued to focus the brand on developing a more substantial presence in the consumer markets with much smaller products such as the Segway Mini Pro.

L.L. Bean.: Made Overseas

L.L. bean, an American privately held retail company founded in 1912, specializes in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment. The brand, continuously known for its outdoor gear and apparel, gets situated in Freeport, Maine, producing its signature boots, outdoor and household items. Many of their products are created in the USA; however, they also have their factories located in India, China, Mexico, and other overseas locations.

Many review websites would accept that indeed, L.L. Bean manufacture many of their signature products in the U.S. but their American made products rarely make up to 10% of their entire product line. A significant lot of their products, however, still get produced in factories outside of the country.

American Girl Dolls: Made Overseas

For a company called “American Girl,” it is natural to think these products are 100% made in the United States. However, that is not entirely so. The varied collection of American Girl dolls gets manufactured in China. The dolls, whose stories initially focused on various American history periods, later expanded to include characters from contemporary life.

The company initially made the dolls from their factory in Middleton, Wisconsin, before getting sold to the big toy brand Mattel in 1998. Mattel now makes most American girl dolls from their Chinese factories, with the doll clothes inclusive. The company continues to bear the word American, but they no longer get made in America.

Uber: Sold Overseas

Uber Technologies Inc. founded in 2009, is an American technology company that renders various transportation services for the American populace. Based in San Francisco by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, this company first launched a ride-sharing solution. Still, its benefits have grown to food and package delivery, amongst many others.

Uber, which is now in over 900 metropolitan areas worldwide, was sold to its Chinese rival, Didi Chuxing in 2016. Although retaining a position as one of the largest firms in the gig economy, CNBC reported that the company was losing up to an aggregate of $1 billion a year to Didi Chuxing and could no longer compete with the Chinese transport company.

Craftsman: Made Overseas

The Craftsman’s company, initially a house brand established by Sears Holding, has long represented the American standard of an ideal quality and durable tool brand. The department store giant held onto this range of quality tools brand up until 2017. Afterward, the brand got acquired by Stanley Black and Decker.

Since the brand acquisition by Stanley Black and Decker and a limited license for the craftsman products got retained, the craftsman products are now getting noticed to get manufactured outside of the United States. Reviews from all American reports show that many of Craftsman’s hand tools get produced and manufactured by Apex Tool Group in China, with only a few still made in America.

Gillette Razors: Made Overseas

The Gillette American brand of safety razors and other personal care products has been in existence since 1901. King C Gillette founded the multinational company now owned by Procter and Gamble and has its factory in Boston, Massachusetts. The merger of Gillette into P&G happened in 2005 after multiple takeover attempts.

Gillette is one of the many American brands made outside the shores of the country. While some of Gillette’s parts get manufactured in the U.S., other significant parts come from China. Their specialty materials, such as leather, come from Italy, while most other fabrics are from China.

Calvin Klein: Made Overseas

Calvin Klein is an American fashion brand founded in 1968. The brand, which goes by the name of its founder, continues to specialize in fashion and lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, leather, perfumery, watches, jewelry, and ready-to-wear. The global lifestyle brand continues to build a reputation as a leader in American fashion through its creative and aesthetic designs.

Although Calvin Klein continues to position itself as an American brand and have ads plastered across the country, it will disappoint to know that the fashion brand continues to receive most of its materials from china. Materials such as leather come from Italy, but many other significant materials get imported from China.

Oakley sunglasses: Made Overseas

Oakley sunglasses is one of those many brands containing the regular “Made in the USA” label, but there have been continuing controversies about where the products get manufactured. Headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California, the brand is now a subsidiary of the Italian corporate giant, Luxottica based in Milan, Italy.

Since the brand acquisition by Luxottica in 2007, the parent company moved some of its production activities to a factory located in China. Further scrutiny revealed that about 70% of Oakley’s parts are from the USA, leaving a significant 30% of their parts sourced from other countries.

Spotify: Sold Overseas

The digital audio streaming company, Spotify, is one of the few brands which continues to offer millions of music and podcasts to its monthly active users via the comfort of their smartphones. Spotify, which launched in the United States in July 2011, is listed on the New York Stock exchange and expands its operations from its complex in Lower Manhattan, New York.

As noted by Tech crunch, in 2013 , the digital streaming provider announced a share swap with Chinese Company, Tencent Music Entertainment. What that means in plain terms is that Spotify is now partially owned by a Chinese company. Spotify is available in Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and many African countries.

Hush Puppies shoes: Made Overseas.

Hush Puppies shoes have been an American brand of contemporary, casual footwear for men, women, and children since its introduction in 1958. Due to their comfort and classic style, this fantastic footwear has continued to appeal to many consumers, old and young alike. Owned by Wolverine Worldwide, the Hush Puppies brand has its headquarters in Rockford, Michigan.

While the acceptance of this brand continues to spike and is available in 120 different countries throughout the world, unfortunately, the beloved leather shoes are not manufactured in Michigan. Instead, they get produced and distributed from a factory located in China. Hush Puppies shoes remain beloved by many Americans to this day and for obvious reasons.

Huffy Bikes: Made Overseas

The huffy corporation, headquartered in Miamisburg, Ohio, since 1887, is a supplier of bicycles. The privately held company was revolutionary in developing convertible bikes in 1949 by introducing the first-ever training wheels for children. The company founded by George Huffman continues to remain a brand close to the hearts of so many Americans.

The company which participated in the revival of the American Cycling industry never overcame its entry-level reputation. Many years and bike models later, the brand finally closed off two of its U.S. based factories and moved their production to China. The company, which also has factories in Mexico and Taiwan, continues to make the Huffy bicycles brand from its factory in china.

Fisher-Price toys: Made Overseas

The Fisher-Price brand founded in 1930 is an American company that produces educational toys for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. This toy brand has continued to fill homes for years with its wide variety of toys for kids of many ages. Fisher-Price, since 1993, now falls under the management of the more prominent toy brand, Mattel, which outsources its production from Chinese factories.

Over the years, the brand has had to issue many recalls of its toys made by its Chinese vendors. Its recalls in 2007 and 2020 were disturbingly due to dangerously high levels of lead. With the company headquarters still in East Aurora, New York, the brand continues to a pledge to be an all-American company and has tried to regain its customers’ confidence once again.

Harley-Davidson: Made Overseas

Harley-Davidson is an all-prestigious American motorcycle manufacturing company founded in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The brand is one of the two major motorcycle brands that survived the Great Depression. Harley-Davidson, which continues to enjoy tremendous loyal followings due to the way it personifies the rugged free-spirit American did not remain a fully American-made product.

The company though have survived numerous ownership agreements, and subsidiary arrangements still have their plants located in Wisconsin, Missouri and Pennsylvania. It took many of their loyal customers by surprise when in 2008, they announced they were moving their production out of the country. Today, many of these reputable brand electric components get made in China.

Melissa and Doug Toys: Made Overseas

Melissa & Doug LLC is one of America’s favorite manufacturers of children’s toys. The company, founded by Melissa and Doug Bernstein in 1988, continues to appeal to many consumers primarily for its classic wooden designs and bright color crafts products. Unfortunately, the Melissa & Doug toys are not all American made.

The toy company whose products are designed at its headquarter in Connecticut manufactures these toy parts from their factory in China. These products continue to get discovered to pose potential health risks. In 2008 and 2009, respectively, the discovery of excessive levels of barium in the surface paint led to a recall of over 26,000 of their toys.

Barbie Dolls: Made Overseas

Barbie fashion dolls manufactured by the American toy company Mattel Inc. are some of the most iconic toys in America and across the globe. Ruth Handler, credited to most of the dolls, initially conceptualized the dolls to be a 3-D version of a paper doll. Today, Barbie dolls have come a long way from being fashionable and straightforward to be a dream toy for many young girls.

They initially were getting manufactured in Japan in 1959, and today, these dolls get made in Chinese, Malaysian, and Indonesian factories. The dolls sold worldwide in over 150 countries are far from being American made products.

Radio Flyers: Made Overseas

Radio flyers, iconic for their red toy wagon, is an American toy company. The toy-producing brand, which remains a symbol of an idyllic childhood in America, started with wooden toy wagons in 1917. Radio Flyer initially makes the toys in Chicago, but that changed after the company moved from metal to plastic and began outsourcing.

With their headquarters still in Chicago, the American factory could not create the plastic parts. For this reason, the company turned to none other than China in 2004. Radio Flyer, whose name was once Radio Steel, continues to make some of its excellent products in the Midwestern U.S., but around two-thirds of its entire products come from China.

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe: Made in the USA

The Cozy Coupe is the iconic red and yellow toy car manufactured and distributed by Little Tikes. The car’s design is mainlly described as a cross between the Volkswagen Beetle and the Fred Flintstone vehicle. The company that started its operations in Ohio in 1969 remains one of the truly great American companies left.

While some parts of these toys get produced in China, the company remains in the USA even after 50 years of operations. The company continues to position itself as a genuine American brand and even features a section on its website devoted to the toys made in America.

Pyrex Glassware: Made in the USA

The Pyrex brand introduced by Corning Inc. in 1915 is a versatile and aesthetic range of cookware used to prepare, bake and store foods in the kitchen. This fantastic brand features various products, from mixing bowls, measuring cups, and other essential items that are a staple in the American kitchen.

The sturdy glassware continues to get manufactured in Corning, New York, and Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Next time you’re cooking with this cookware, you don’t have to bother about its credibility as it’s sincerely a made in USA brand.

Zippo Lighters: Made in the USA

The Zippo lighter has a reputation as a reusable metal lighter produced by Zippo Manufacturing Company. First manufactured in 1933 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, they grew popular during World War II, as they represented the steely grit of the U.S. Military. Founded by American inventor George G. Blaisdell, the brand produced the first Zippo lighter in 1933.

Since the colored crayons appeared to the public in 1903, they remain an essential childhood staple today.

One of the notable brands that continue to add significantly to the U.S. GDP, Crayola has a U.S. workforce of about 1,650 staff, out of which 1,221 gets located in their headquarters in Easton. The Post-it note is a paper and stationery brand made by the American company, 3M. Post-it notes available in various colors, shapes, sizes, and adhesive strengths get made proudly in America.

KitchenAid Mixers: Made in the USA

The KitchenAid mixer is a mainstay in many kitchens around the country and the world at large. The American home appliance brand owned by Whirlpool Corporation was started in 1919 by The Hobart Manufacturing Company. KitchenAid’s first model was the H-5 stand mixers and afterwards continued to create durable multi-purpose kitchen tools that come in different colors.

The brand that began as metal water coolers for blue-collar workers in 1947 has become an essential product used when a refrigerator is unavailable.

The company has multiple production plants in different parts of the U.S. It manufactures baked products like cookies and cakes and sells beverages like milkshakes. Slinky: Made in the USA

The Slinky range of toys is one of those products that turned out to be something different from initially intended. The Airstream American brand of caravans is one of the easily recognizable beauties of the open road. Lodge Cast Iron: Made in the USA

American manufacturer of cast iron cookware, Lodge Manufacturing Company remains one of the oldest cookware companies in continuous operations. The company founded by Joseph Lodge in 1896 is still owned by members of the Lodge family. The Lodge cast-iron brand remains not just a made in the USA product; it is also a family-owned business.

The cookware company boasts quality craftsmanship and lifetime durability for its products. The cast iron is a worthy heirloom that families can hand down to generations.

Whirlpool Appliances: Made in the USA

The Whirlpool Corporation is a distinguished American multinational manufacturer of home appliances that has its headquarters in Benton Charter Township, Michigan. The company founded by Louis Upton in 1911 continues to supply American households with essential devices and makes everything from refrigerators to dishwashers. This company is and continues to portray itself as a reputable American Brand.

This staple brand of potato chips has become one of the most popular American snack foods for nearly every barbeque, holiday, or family event.

The brand, founded in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, currently produces electric and acoustic guitars.
