We want to applaud some newcomers to the scene, but we also want to give fair respect to veteran restaurants that have lived and breathed ground beef for decades. Tookie’s Hamburgers & More – Kemah, Texas

Although the burger joint’s name may conjure up images of the Tooks, this establishment has nothing to do with the Hobbit, despite its intriguing story. Tookie’s was inspired by the Tooker Brothers drugstore that the entrepreneur remembers as a kid, but its true specialty is burgers. Tookie’s first opened its doors in 1975. Original owner Jim Spears opted not to reopen the burger establishment due to flood damage caused by Hurricane Ike.

But the iconic burger joint wasn’t finished yet. Barry Terrell bought Tookie’s in 2011 after being inspired by the community’s desire for it to reopen to preserve its original character. They have a large menu with various options, all created with fresh-cut beef and locally sourced toppings that leave a delectable flavor on your tongue.

Triple XXX – West Lafayette, Indiana

Although Triple XXX bills itself as a family restaurant, it is much more than that – it is where Purdue University students feel at ease. The breakfast club at Harry’s Chocolate Shop and making fun of Tom Crean are as much a Purdue tradition as Triple XXX. The oldest drive-in in Indiana is also one of the most family-friendly.

Many of the burgers at Triple XXX are named after Boilermaker greats and are crafted with house-ground sirloin (they call them chop steaks for a reason). The Duane Purvis All-American with peanut butter is a fan favorite, while the Bernie Flowers with Miracle Whip has a tart kick. It’s difficult to find someone in the United States who hasn’t heard of In-N-Out Burger. While In-N-Out is only available in the western US, Petey’s Burgers is available on the East Coast. Town Topic – Kansas City, Missouri

In 1937, Claude Sparks planned to operate a modest café at 2442 1/2 Broadway in Kansas City, Missouri, and offer five-pence hamburgers. The tiny, quiet diner is ideal for a single dinner while surrounded by a 1930s feel, and its menu features a large selection of burgers and sandwiches that can be paired with homemade chili or other side dishes.

Small Cheval – Chicago, Illinois

Small Cheval, which is not to be confused with the similarly named Chicago eatery Au Cheval, is a small, fast-paced burger business with a simple menu of cheeseburgers, hamburgers, and fries. Guests may order beers and shakes at the burger shop, which also has a covered patio area during the winter months. A restaurant that sells kombucha and quinoa bowls is located one hundred seventy-five steps from Cherry Cricket (we counted). Cherry Cricket isn’t like that at all. It’s a meeting place for the entire city of Denver. It has kept its divey, old-school vibe despite closing due to a fire in April 2017 and reopening in April 2018.

This is a location where friends may reconnect after a long time while eating onion rings and playing darts. There are no pre-arranged burgers to pick from when it comes to the cuisine. You may make your burger as you like it, even with peanut butter, and Cherry Cricket will still give you a fantastic product. The greatest burger here is the one you order. White Hut – Springfield, Massachusetts

If there’s one restaurant that exemplifies rebirth, it’s this one. The informal, counter-serve cafe, which opened in 1939, closed in February 2020, much to the dismay of foodies. However, only six months later, it was bought out and reopened, and it was better than ever. It’s a good thing because their grilled-onion-laden burger patties would be a pity to lose forever.

The Hut burger is thin and griddled in the form of a traditional diner burger. The cheese is white American, and as the onions are cooked, they take on a peppery, buttery flavor (also, maybe from butter and pepper). The bun is light, seedless, and unobtrusive. They have a variety of conventional toppings, but you don’t have to add lettuce, tomato, or anything else to your White Hut burger. Some burgers are sandwich stackers, resulting in a circular food Jenga when finished.

Nation Kitchen & Bar – Cincinnati, Ohio

Nation is likely to top the category for “Most Humorous Establishment Name,” as it is named after temperance activist Carrie Nation, who fought the widespread availability of alcoholic beverages even before Prohibition. Carrie Nation, a 6-foot-tall Kentucky native, destroyed taverns across America at the turn of the century. She claimed a divine mandate to preach temperance by taking aim at any pub or saloon that crossed her way using a hatchet. “Everyone is welcome, except Carrie” became a popular bar motto.

Despite the irony, Nation serves some of the best cocktails and burgers. Many in Cincinnati love their unique Nation Burger, which features a six-ounce burger with smoked cheddar cheese and Memphis BBQ sauce, onion straws, and horseradish aioli. The historical phrase and hatchet emblems are featured in the Nation Restaurant and Bar, which was created to honor Cincinnati’s rich history.

Keller’s Drive-In – Dallas, Texas

Keller’s burgers are some of the best in Dallas. There are probably more costly burgers in Dallas, while Keller’s are almost always less than three dollars. And, as our intrepid burger critic discovered, finding the half-century-old pleasures of the diner-style burgers at this historic drive-in – jukebox and all – is one of life’s most satisfying experiences. This modest, old-school burger establishment serves outstanding burgers to bikers and families on Dallas’ Northwest Highway.

This hamburger shop has been in business since 1950, and their burgers start at less than two dollars! The juicy patties are piled high with tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup, and mustard and served on a soft, seeded bun. Devouring them while listening to the songs on the jukebox will transport you back to the 1950s.

Miller’s Bar – Dearborn, Michigan

There are several old-school burger establishments on our list, but none compares to Miller’s Bar, a historic watering spot operating since 1947. A lot has changed in the Detroit area, but one thing has stayed constant: Miller’s Bar burgers. They’re a little pricier than those of other restaurants, but it’s well worth it! Miller’s burgers are made with a thick patty topped with onions, ketchup, pickles, and melty cheese before being wrapped in wax paper and served immediately.

Get a medium burger placed on a steamed bun with a slab of Velveeta and a pile of white onions that barely holds its own against the waterfall of delicious liquid and cheese product that explodes with each mouthful. It’s served on wax paper “commando-style” in a place where you order at the bar, and no one keeps track of what you ordered. The honor system is set firmly in place here. Loretta’s Northwesterner – Seattle, Washington

You may have heard about Loretta’s Northwesterner, a dive pub in South Park, and their double tavern burger. Allow us to introduce you if you haven’t. Loretta’s diner is a gift in a world where fast-food chain restaurants dominate the food business. Loretta’s is a small pub in Seattle that offers a basic, no-frills atmosphere ideal for neighborhood gatherings. The Tavern burger stands up to its great hype, and it’s just as excellent with hand-cut fries and a beer at the bar as it is wrapped in wax paper for takeout.

On the exterior, their burgers appear small and unassuming, yet one bit of the Tavern Burger will have the cheese gushing into your mouth, accompanied by juicy meat, buttered bread, and tasty toppings. This kind of burger will make you want to eat more. Loretta’s has a great back patio for hanging out but bringing your burger to Left Bank and enjoying it with a bottle of natural wine is also a good option.

Hubcap Grill – Houston, Texas

If you ever visit Houston, there’s a good chance you’ll come across a Hubcap Grill, which has four locations across the city and one at the airport. That type of growth puts them on the verge of being too big. Still, the quality hasn’t decreased in the least, and who wouldn’t want to be able to eat a spectacular burger at the airport instead of a combination lunch of Kind bars and agonizing loneliness? Being a franchise restaurant hasn’t caused it to lose any of its flavors.

Hubcap’s patties are large and gorgeously griddled, so they must be accompanied by hefty toppings like thick caramelized onions and a structurally sound yet appealing bun. Their delectable burgers, produced with fresh chuck beef hand-formed into patties and served on toasted buns, are certainly worth a try!

Grill Marks – Greenville, South Carolina

Grill Marks’ burgers are made entirely with chopped certified Angus beef, rather than ground, for a fuller, richer, meatier texture. The designs range from the French Connection, which features caramelized onions, roasted garlic, Brie, and cabernet ketchup, to the Hot Mess, which combines two patties with a hot dog. The Café Au Poivre, a coffee-and-peppercorn-crusted patty with cremini mushrooms and au Poivre sauce, is even better.

It’s as close to a flawless steak dinner on a bun as possible. Grill Marks has three locations in South Carolina – two in Greenville and one in Columbia – but their initial restaurant in downtown Greenville is still their best. Their onion rings and fries are delectable and will leave you wanting more.

Nic’s Grill – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

If you have a strong desire to learn more about history, you should travel to El Reno, Oklahoma, to sample the Sooner State’s famous onion burger in the place where it all began. Locals and visitors alike recall heading to Nic’s, standing in line, and waiting for the guy himself to create one of his burger masterpieces if they wanted the absolute most jaw-droppingly excellent burger in the state (and one that’s still generously loaded with onions per local tradition).

Nic’s grill may appear disappointing at first glance. The restaurant is modest, and you’d be surprised if it made the list. However, once you’ve ordered your first half-pound, your opinions will begin to change. Even though the owner, Nic, is no longer behind the grill, you can still get a great burger piled high with cheese and toppings and delivered with a fork and abundant French fries.

Chroni’s Famous Sandwich Shop — Los Angeles, California

Chroni’s is a fantastic restaurant. It was once located in East Los Angeles at Conner and Whittier Blvd., then relocated to the corner of Whittier and Keenan. Selling excellent all-natural casing beef hotdogs, great hamburgers, pastrami, and much, much more, this is a must-visit restaurant! Chroni’s chiliburger received rave reviews from L.A. Times critic Jonathan Gold.

This beef patty is topped with cheddar cheese, red onions, and caramelized onions, and it’s the burger of a James Beard Award-winning chef. Also, according to Food & Wine’s restaurant editor, Jordana Rothman, the patty is fried in beef fat, giving the burger a true umami flavor, especially when sandwiched between two slices of handmade Parmesan cheese bread, making it an umami-packed powerhouse.

Pizza Loves Emily — Brooklyn, New York

To be honest, the Emmy Burger is something you have to work for to make it a part of your life. Limited availability per night.” Kate Krader, the culinary editor at Bloomberg Pursuits, is a self-described messy food lover, so she doesn’t mind the “monumental filling.”

If you are lucky enough to get this burger before it sells out, you can expect a dry-aged patty topped with a mountain of Grafton cheddar cheese and caramelized onions, along with Korean chili sauce. However, it’s the pretzel bread that makes this a truly wonderful burger, Krader told TODAY. A comparable double-patty burger with American cheese is available at the West Village restaurant.

This popular burger is available in singles, doubles, and cheese-topped variants. Don’t miss out if you’re in the neighborhood!

The Cozy Inn – Salina, Kansas

Sliders are popular in Central Kansas, and this one from The Cozy Inn in Salina is among the finest. Even though Jonathan Gold earned a profession evaluating restaurants in the Los Angeles region, his absolute favorite burgers were the sliders available exclusively in Central Kansas. “The teeny-tiny creatures have the flavor of an onion’s spiritual concept of an onion.

“They’re very cool,” Gold said. These little onion-laden burgers have been produced since 1922. Interestingly, this was the same year that Wichita got its first White Castle, a Midwest institution that also serves tiny burgers with grilled onions. Cozy’s burgers were slid down the counter using waxed paper, and some say this gave rise to the term “sliders.” (Others put the term’s origins in the 1940s.) The initial cost per burger was only 5 cents. Customers can get a Cozy burger for $1.19 today, which is still a bargain.

4505 Burgers & BBQ Restaurant — San Francisco, California
