Hollywood is a surprisingly refreshing place when it comes to fashion, and the Met Gala is one of the most awaited events every year where the world of fashion meets the world of Hollywood. With celebrities decked in some of the most unique and versatile designer clothes, this event is a real dream come true for both fans of fashion and Hollywood. However, fashion, like most artistic avenues, is based, to some extent, on experimentation. Therefore, what comes out as a choice of dress is not always pleasing to the eye.
While some dresses are utterly ravishing and wonderfully crafted, some dresses can be outright revolting and challenging to comprehend. Clearly, not everybody has the same taste, and some designers tend to overlook that fact for a sense of uniqueness.
Here are some of the excellent and bad dresses from the Met Galas held over the years.
This dress, worn by Katy Perry for the 2010 Met Gala, is clearly an example of how dresses can look good in theory but can completely go bad in real life. Designed by Jeremy Scott, this dress reminds us of the chandeliers in most bungalows that are hung low. Whenever she walks, it must be hard to do it properly.
Furthermore, it must have been challenging even to complete the easiest of tasks that whole day, and the people sitting next to her, if they did, must have gotten a lot of light.
Amber Valletta is connected to the Met Gala slightly more than some Hollywood celebrities because she has presented some of her own designs to the Gala over the years. However, it is this design of her 2004 appearance that really got people talking.
With the John Galliano skirt and the signature Maggie Norris Couture Corset, she resembled an aristocratic woman from the enlightenment period and was clearly very wonderfully dressed to look at. Not to mention her well-groomed hair was like the cherry on top.
Rihanna attended the 2017 Gala with a very sophisticated dress designed by Rei Kawakubo. Previously it was the talk of another event, namely, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.”
While Rihanna did a great job, honoring the theme faithfully by wearing everything by the designer and getting her appearance done by the designer Rei herself, we are unsure if this sophisticated theme was that great a hit for the general public to admire.
Madonna, the queen of pop, is known quite well for wearing very little. However, this dress is a real upgrade for Madonna as it uniquely covers her entire body. She got taped entirely from head to toe, and this sure was one of the right dresses.
The rest of the dress was a Givenchy Haute Couture. It looks quite remarkable, but the chains make it all the more beautiful. There are two chain sets, one covering her torso, another her forehead, both of which go very well with the black tape dress.
Eiza Gonzalez’s 2019 dress is a beautifully designed marvel that kept people talking about it for days. Designed with a tight black dress, covering her throughout with tight naughty slits to give it a beautiful definition, the white flowing cape adds a new dimension to that dress nailing the look of the heavenly bodies.
The glitzy shining hand gloves paired with her beautiful earrings make her look very alluring, heavenly, and goddess-like. Her hairstyle, too, goes very well with this outfit.
Interestingly, this dress was first worn by the designer Donatella Versace herself for the 1999 Met Gala. However, this dress was popularized by Jennifer Lopez when she wore it to the 2000 Grammys. In her defense, J Lo does make most dresses she wears popular.
It goes without saying that Donatella Versace too looks ravishing in this dress, and being the designer herself, she must’ve been very proud wearing it. It is one exceptionally designed dress, though.
If trying to figure out what someone’s wearing would become a game, then it sure would be a very difficult one in the case of Pharrell’s wife, Helen. Since that year’s Gala was on Rei Kawakubo’s Avant-Garde themes, it comes as no surprise that this was in store.
Resembling a pufferfish by several accounts, this was one dress that most people will remember for the wrong reasons. Also, we wonder if her hands can be stretched out or not.
This magnanimous dress worn by Taylor Hill for the 2019 Met Gala was a spectacle to watch. It was designed by Ralph Lauren, and she also wore Butani jewels. Her appearance was very reminiscent of Old Hollywood, which was a good change of pace for people who are into the new Hollywood attires.
Immensely popular as a Victoria’s Secret Model and as an actress, Taylor grabbed many eyes with that beautiful dress.
Anne Hathaway is one great and adorable actress. Known for her works in several of the best movies ever made, she is a treat to watch. The 2013 Gala is no different. Adorned with a perfectly designed zig-zag black shiny dress by Valentino, Anne Hathaway looked beautiful.
This photograph of hers is a wonderful example of how talented and beautiful Anne Hathaway is. Her dress suits her a lot and is definitely the kind that most people admired a lot in the Gala.
Gisele Bündchen’s iconic look from the 2008 Met Gala was one famous moment. Her attire was admired throughout the world, and it has featured several lists of the best dresses ever worn since then. This pink satin Versace dress was adored for its well-placed cutouts and a design that screamed of sophistication from a mile away.
We’re sure that her now-husband, Tom Brady, must have asked her to recreate this look. Her expression in this photograph is that of confidence, and this dress heightens that look.
Julie Macklowe stunned the people around her by dressing up as a tablecloth almost. Her look involved a very sophisticated checkered square cloth covering her from both sides without any hand slits. For most people, figuring out where her hands were was a major puzzle.
However, her shoes are spectacular. With a black and white shoe going all the way around and some very tall soles to boot off, this appearance is a lovely one, even though her total attire is a confusing combination.
Jennifer Lopez is one of the most talented celebrities when wearing some of the most famous gala dresses in history. This dress isn’t any different either. Decked with a bunch of flowery decorations all around her shoulders, the Fuschia Gucci gown and J Lo were a match made in heaven, as we doubt anybody else could have pulled it off the way she did.
Her hairstyle matches the attire quite well too, and the fact that she tied it back, overpowering the features of her dress, is another excellent choice.
Not to downsize Cameron Diaz’s achievements or anything, but clearly, her dress seems really quite similar to a trendy bridesmaid dress choice. One could even compare it to a layered cake. Designed by Christian Dior, this dress is quite stylish and artistic amidst its simplistic flowing design.
Another great addition to her overall look is those beautifully glowing turquoise ornaments she is wearing. They accentuate her appearance in addition to the beautiful layer dress.
Claire Danes, famous for the TV series Homeland, decked herself to look almost exactly like Cinderella. This beautiful light blue gown was a hit in the 2016 Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala.
It was a very efficient design, as was later revealed because it had everything in its power to look voluminous and heavy, and yet, it was reported that this dress was light as a feather. It has all the grandeur and the simplicity intertwined into it, so much that it feels like it’s right out of a fairytale.
Jared Leto may be one of the best actors of recent times, but he is also one of the weirdest. Aside from sending used condoms and dead rats to his castmates to prepare for his role as the joker, he is quite a public figure. So, it came as no surprise when Jared Leto entered the 2019 Met Gala with another head-shaped apparel that resembled his face.
His dress, too, was quite stunning, with a bright red gown adorned with exquisite jewelry.
Madonna is quite famous for her dresses, and therefore she makes it on this list yet another time. Worn for the 2009 Met Gala, this short dress with boots that high was a spectacle to watch, not to mention the beautiful blue streak of hair.
This attire would be more suited for a music video of the 70s or 80s, but clearly, since it’s Madonna, she seems to have pulled this look off with all her style. Also, the gloves and boots do add a kind of cute teenager vibe.
It is one thing to accessorize random things for style, and it’s a whole new thing to chop one’s own hair before a gala event and carry it around like a hand fan. So, when Jaden Smith cut off his beautiful dreadlocks and carried it around as an accessory, it was quite a surprise to see.
His dress was quite a catch. Dressed in jet black with shiny boots and quite sophisticated ornaments, he seemed very stylish. But the dreadlocks in his hand might not qualify as good fashion.
Sarah Jessica Parker made history with this beautifully designed dress that spoke of fashion’s complexities quite well. Designed by one of the best designers ever, Alexander McQueen, this dress was in response to the theme “Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion.”
Allure magazine voted this dress as one of the best ever, and we whole-heartedly agree. This is one extraordinary dress that was featured in the 2006 Met Gala.
Celine Dion was very excited to make her first appearance at the Met Gala, especially since she is very interested in fashion. She reportedly said that this was like preparing for a kiss. This dress did do all the justice to that anticipation, being very well-presented.
Going for a silver top and an Isabel Marant black dress wrapped around to look ravishing, Celine Dion’s dark eye shadows went very well with this dress.
Although quite beautifully draped and quite beautiful to look at, Rihanna’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala 2015’s reception was met with very interesting memes online. Guo Pei, the Chinese designer, designed this yellow Chinese couture.
The memes about this dress included comparisons of this dress with a pizza, as the dress on top of the red carpet background was very amusing to watch and resembled a pizza. Some people compared other photos of this same dress to omelets and other food items.
Doutzen Kroes’s 2010 Gala gown was one of the best looking outfits that year. The light milky blue gown coupled with a very beautiful Doutzen Kroes was a combination like no other. Her golden locks of hair and the bright red lipstick were a treasure to watch.
Designed by Zac Posen, this gown was every bit a beautiful example of a princess gown, and people who didn’t know Cinderella was from a fairy tale would just assume that Doutzen Kroes is Cinderella.
Cate Blanchett is one of the greatest actors of recent times, and she does an equally great job dressing up as well. Balenciaga designed this golden fringed dress she wore to the 2007 gala. Quite stunning to look at, especially with its tiny fringes wavering about and shining, this was a perfect suit for the theme “Poiret: King of Fashion.”
Her bright turquoise earrings were another great addition to this. It’s no surprise, though, given how Cate Blanchett has always dressed exceptionally well.
Elle Fanning was an excellent addition to the Gala of 2019 when she appeared with this peach-pink colored dress and a bell-bottom trouser that looks very comfortable. Sure, it may not be like the other dresses on the list, but it seems like something one could fashion out of regular clothes and is, therefore, a great fashion statement.
Her nails match the dress’s color, and she sure seems very proud and happy to be wearing this outfit. You go, girl!
Gigi Hadid’s dress is a combination of two different dresses if one sees carefully. A little bit of French Maid, combined with the grandeur of a gown waiting to be recognized. She pulled it off decently well. However, most magazines have put it in some of the ‘worst dresses’ lists.
Furthermore, this dress was designed by Tommy Hilfiger, so we’re hoping someone surely thought it through and had something very cool in mind, hence this effect from the dress.
Cara Delevigne sure knows how to dress up strangely. This dress is not very bad at first sight, especially given how she wears a very slim skin-colored dress with rainbow stripes all along. Furthermore, to match her dress style, she also carries a wand of the same color.
The highlight of this look, however, is her headgear. Completely decked with Chiquita Bananas, fake teeth, and eyeballs, it is one creepy basket to wear over the head.
Lady Gaga has been famous over the years for wearing unique costumes, but this one certainly takes the cake. Wearing a unitard that resembles an ancient queen’s clothing, Lady Gaga’s overcoat is very stylish and futuristic and looks like it is made of circuits all the way.
Designed by Versace, the theme ‘Manus X Machina’ was a very well represented one, thanks to Lady Gaga’s dress. Furthermore, her heels are alarmingly high for someone who intends to walk around the whole day.
Sarah Jessica Parker makes it to this list one more time, and she looks very stylish and badass at the same time. Wearing a golden dress with several exquisite patterns from the Giles Fall Collection, this dress was a hit amongst most of the attendees of this Gala.
To top it all, Sarah Jessica Parker also wore a stylish headpiece that looks a lot like something a punk rock band would wear. This look is one stunning combination to admire, and Sara, as always, didn’t disappoint with her dress.
Beyonce’s dress was a very well-designed spectacle, to say the least. Known for her grandiose outfits, this 2015 Met Gala dress was no different. Wearing a transparent body gown decked with very ornamental glitters from top to bottom in a patterned manner.
She looked every bit like the queen she is said to be, and this is one of her best appearances in a Gala ever. Kudos to the designer, Givenchy.
Jessica Alba has been considered one of the most beautiful women in the world for quite a long time now, and one would expect her to wear a very over-the-top ravishing dress for the Gala. However, this time, she decided to wear a cute little dress that would remind someone of a high school prom dress.
Decked with a blue dress with shiny ornamentation in the front, she sure looks very comfortable and confident in that dress. After all, she is one of the most famous Hollywood stars in the world.
This dress worn by Gwyneth Paltrow is quite weird for several reasons. Firstly, the neckline is very tightly towards the neck, making it an extraordinary fit. Secondly, most critics of this dress attacked it from all angles, calling it the ‘Grandma Dress’ and reportedly saying ‘Grandma needs her fancy gown back’ and so on.
However, any of this didn’t deter Gwyneth Paltrow from smiling and looking so confident for the camera.
Katy Perry is another icon whose dressing choices have been revered for quite some time. Therefore, it came as no surprise when Katy Perry dressed up in this grandiose wingsuit, complete with an exquisite set of wings. Entirely covered in golden, the white wings add a beautiful and vibrant look to her appearance.
Her blond hair too quite matched the outfit and added to a great appearance. Her golden shoes went very well with this outfit.
Designer Marc Jacobs did a great job getting his look right for the 2012 NY Gala. He wore white boxers underneath to accentuate it with a black see-through-dress completed with quite well-designed patterns. His shoes, complete with jeweled belt buckles, are glitzy in the right ways.
One very advantageous thing about this look is that he seems very comfortable, and we’re sure he had a great time at the Gala. He looks pleased too.
One problem with this look is that some of us couldn’t even tell that this is Katy Perry. With quite a good gown with a black surface combined with a golden flowery pattern running through the entire dress, this is not a very bad attire after all. But the hairstyle she chose and the makeup she wore make it a challenging style to tell.
Katy Perry has been lauded for several of her Gala appearances, but this seems to have clearly missed the mark.
Kim Kardashian has made some excellent fashion choices for some galas, but apparently, this is not one of them. Also pregnant with her baby, she decided to sport her baby bump with a dress that is very reminiscent of curtains draped across a body.
This dress definitely did not garner too many positive reviews and clearly went on to become a meme too. We hope Kanye did an excellent job consoling her on the way home, as she said she cried all the way home after she realized people didn’t like her dress.
Worn by Katie Holmes to the 2014 Met Gala, this dress was the exact color of the mustard dip. Although it wasn’t that bad, it wasn’t received very well by the Gala critics and was ridiculed as being similar to mustard.
Besides being addressed as one of the worst dresses in some lists, it was quite interesting to note that the whole Gala was said to be the one with some of the worst dresses that year. Now, we can’t blame Katie Holmes for all that.
Nicole Kidman made a stunning appearance at the 2003 Met gala with this beautiful skin-colored dress designed by Tom Ford for Gucci. Needless to say, most people really loved it, and it was considered one of the best dresses of the Gala.
Complete with dazzling jewelry and Nicole Kidman’s beautiful golden locks of hair tied back, this look garnered attention from most stars who attended the Gala. It also helped that the theme of the event was “Goddess: The Classical Mode.”
Katy Perry makes it into this list yet another time, and clearly, this dress is quite good. However, the reviews were not all positive, with some people complaining that she miscalculated the size of her necklace and that it overshadowed her otherwise simple and minimalistic look.
The white and light pink dress, decked with rope lights, closely resembled a jellyfish. This, combined with the necklace, was the only problem for most critics.
Gwyneth Paltrow makes it to this list yet another time, and this time, it is for a risky wardrobe malfunction possibility. While simplistic and quite minimalist in design, her dress ended up becoming the talk of the day for how it could potentially be considered as flashing as her sides are visible clearly.
Furthermore, it was almost like a satin drape tied around her. That’s how minimalistic it is. However, we think it is quite stunning and that she looks beautiful in it.
Beyonce makes it to this list another time, only this time, she’s here wearing a gorgeous black dress till the point where you look down at her feet, to realize that the black dress slowly turns into a bunch of purple-blue feathers. However, it’s not that bad, but anybody with good taste would agree that it could do better without the feathers.
Most people had mixed opinions about this dress, praising the top half for how good it looked but exclaiming that the feathers spoiled it.
This is another dress inspired by the theme “Rei Kawakubo/Comme de Garcons: Art of the In-Between.” This unique dress was way puffier than the rest on the list as it was literally made of air-filled pockets. Solange Knowles, however, looked quite stylish, and we think that although strange, this dress is quite good to look at.
Another good thing about this dress is she wouldn’t quickly get hurt if she bumped into something or fell accidentally, what with the extra padding protecting her from any damage.
Shailene Woodley’s 2018 Gala dress was a stylish one, no doubt. But it made most people not so happy owing to how uncomfortable it looked to walk around and sit in. Interestingly, this could also probably be a nod to Joan of Arc. Her hairstyle didn’t seem to be going with it, with the fringes looking very weird.
Designed by Ralph Lauren, this dress featured several worst dress lists. It would probably go well over at the History Cosplay Con, but we doubt such an event exists.
The 2014 Gala was quite infamous for some of the celebrities’ outfits being quite bad, but luckily for Blake Lively, it was spectacular. This form-fitting gown designed by Gucci is one beautiful dress combined with such class and elegance. Her classic Hollywood curls only add to the beautiful and exquisite style of her appearance.
She seems very confident and happy from the looks of this photograph.
One of the most visionary actors of recent times, who inspired an entire generation, the King of Wakanda himself, Chadwick Boseman, looks very stylish and respectful in this dress. His style is reminiscent of church clothes. The symbolism and beauty of this dress are quite immense and worth acclaim.
Designed by Versace, many people really liked this dress for how unique it is and for well-dressed Chadwick Boseman looks in this outfit.
Zendaya looks like someone who knows how to dress well. Decked with some very stunning jewelry and in a dress so fair, it comes as no surprise that Zendaya’s look was admired by most people present there.
Inspired by the theme that was derivative of Chinese culture, this Fausto Puglisi dress is an eye grabber and did a great job.
Solange Knowles makes it to this list another time. Interestingly, this time, she is on this list because of a very experimental and avant-garde dress choice. This dress resembles a UFO, and it strangely circularly covers her entire body, but her face pops out.
Although futuristic and stylish, this dress was still considered by critics as being too strange to be pulled off on the red carpet. But it’s a good thing she wore this here because we wonder where else could she wear it anyway.
This look is pretty straightforward in that Alan Cummings wore the Scottish trademark choice of the tartan kilt. Worn to the event with the theme “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.”
This look garnered him a lot of praise and put him in the several best gala dress lists. Interestingly, this is not the first time he has worn a kilt to an event and is a proud Scottish American who likes his heritage.
Worn by designer John Galliano, this set of clothes do not seem to match any logic whatsoever. Dressed like a cross between a circus ringmaster and a pirate, many people really didn’t like his dress. However, another problem with this dress choice is that not even in the slightest was it a match for his date’s dress.
Charlize Theron, his date for that event, looked quite good with her deep red gown but clearly was nowhere a match to Mr. Galliano’s appearance.
This dress choice by the girl group 3LW was almost a disaster as the theme “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years” had nothing to do with it. Dressed in shorts and crop tops and neon skin tights, this group looked more like they were going shopping at the mall than to the Met Gala.
This attire definitely helped them gain attention, though, but clearly for being a mismatch rather than a right dress choice.
Karolina Kurkova dressed up in a gorgeous snow-white gown with a huge flowing section that had ‘I Love You’ written in bright red. While it did look great at first sight, we’re quite sure that it must have looked soiled and muddy when she left home as the bright white furry borders would be no match to the filthy and muddy surroundings.
That is unless she had used one of those revolutionary nanomaterial paint that could repel dust particles, which seems highly unlikely.
