Use Dairy, Not Water and Oil
Most boxed cake mixes call for plain water. But think about how good your cake would taste if you added something with a boost of flavor and richness? That’s exactly what happens when you swap milk for water. The milk also increases the cake’s denseness, giving it a more homemade texture.
If you want to take things to the next level, you can add buttermilk. Don’t have buttermilk in the fridge? Don’t sweat it! You can make it yourself by mixing a cub of whole milk with a tiny dash of vinegar. Let it sit, and voila! You have buttermilk. And of course, be sure to use butter instead of oil. Just make sure to melt the butter first.
